Narrow defeat for Presentation in South East hockey final
A gallant Presentation Wexford hockey team suffered a narrow 1 - 0 defeat to Abbey Community School, Waterford, in the South East Inter A final on Wednesday January 25th.Despite the adverse weather conditions both teams produced a wonderful display of skill at the top quality Astroturf facility in Bellfield, Enniscorthy. Both teams had come through their respective league sections unbeaten with the Waterford side notching up some very impressive high scoring victories.
During the first ten minutes the Presentation girls took control of the game and had some fine attacking moves finishing with two very near misses from Shannon O’Brien on the left wing. Short corners, taken well by Aoibhinn O’Connor for Wexford, did not yield a goal as Abbey’s captain, Orla Murphy, rallied her team of defenders.
Abbey stepped up the pressure 20 minutes into the game, in particular on the left wing with numerous attacks from Iona Heffernan which eventually led to a goal shortly before half time. The lead gave the Abbey girls extra confidence at the re start as they continued to pressurize the Wexford defence. Captain Dearbhla Daly continually urged her troops in the Wexford defence and managed to keep a clean sheet in the second half. Player of the match for the second half must go to Sarah Berry in the Wexford goal who brought off some very brave and athletic saves.
This display by the Wexford girls gives great hope for the future of hockey in the school. The Team are: Sarah Berry, Gabija Varnelyte, Shannon O’Brien, Sadhbh Slaven, Chloe Thomas, Eileen Larkin, Katie Dempsey, Sarah Culleton, Niamh Butler, Austija Varnelyte, Eadaoin Fitzgerald, Aoibhinn O’ Connor, Róisín Scallan, Dearbhla Daly, Orla Coleman and Zi O’Neill.

The 2nd Year Hockey Team 2011-2012
Our 2nd year hockey team has seen tremendous progress since the start of the year. Training was held every Tuesday and Thursday and the panel showed great dedication and commitment to attend these lunch time sessions. We played games against St Leo’s of Carlow; Loreto Kilkenn; Coláiste Bhríde, Carne; and our neighbours Loreto Wexford. Our reward for this hard work was a string of good performances culminating in a hard fought draw with Colaiste Bhride. There is no doubt that the future of hockey in this school is in safe hands.
Full Panel: April Roche, Eimear Breen, Katie Cunningham, Hannah Rossiter, Holly Byrne, Chloe Murphy, Rebecca Cullen, Camila Amirhanov, Sarah Roche, Saoirse Laffan, Laura Dempsey, Fawn Ming-Khwan, Sara Byrne, Andrea Byrne, Hayley Roche, Eire Brennan.
